Electronic Prototyping for Manufacturing

Although electronic products can vary considerably in complexity, they all typically require a similar level of development to get them through to mass production. A well-considered specification and prototyping plan is crucial and allows us to account for any developments or unknown changes and challenges throughout the project. Creating this specification typically the first step in developing an electronic prototype. By working methodically and stage by stage we can ensure the development journey is as smooth as possible.

Electronic Prototype Testing

As with all prototyping, the value lies in the testing and evaluation of the given prototype. Throughout the electronic prototyping process, we will typically create setups which differ in complexity, from basic bench prototypes all the way through to fitting the final custom electronics within its enclosure. We may also create prototypes for different purposes. For example, to test a specific functionality or to test in situ with the mechanical design.

Research Prototypes

If your project idea is particularly novel, we will delve into extensive research on various electronic components to evaluate their suitability.
By conducting individual tests on the key active parts of your design, we ensure they meet your project’s unique requirements. For instance, if your project requires a motor, we’ll rigorously test different types of motors such as servos, stepper motors, and DC motors to determine the best option based on torque, speed, noise, and cost.
This stage is crucial in ensuring each of the ‘active’ components of your product performs optimally.

Bench Prototypes

Taking the next step towards a functioning system, we create bench prototypes to test specific functions or the entire system. Using development boards like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or ESP32 Development Boards, we will build basic firmware programs to evaluate the interaction between hardware and firmware.
These early, lower-fidelity prototypes are instrumental in refining both hardware and firmware specifications, guiding the development of your final product. We document these prototypes with images, firmware logic, and component selections to inform future development stages.

Custom Electronics

Creating custom electronics such as a PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) is the final step towards a mass production ready design.
To create these custom samples, our electronics engineers start by creating detailed block diagrams before moving onto component selection, schematic design, and PCB layout. A 3D model of the custom PCB or electronic assembly is then generated and reviewed in our 3D CAD software to ensure precise fitting and functionality. Collaboration between product designers and electronics hardware engineers is crucial at this stage to fine-tune the design.
Once confirmed, we proceed to PCB production and following further testing and potentially some extra rounds of PCB development we will be left with a final working electronic system ready to be programmed and fit into your product.
