We work with established businesses expanding their product range and entrepreneurs building something new. If you have a product concept you want to bring to life effectively, this page will help you determine whether we’re the right team for it.
Who does Idea Reality work best with?
Our strongest client relationships share a common thread: a genuine product ambition and the readiness to pursue it properly.
Established businesses growing their product range. You already have products on the market and you understand your customers. Whether you’re solving a problem with an existing product or launching something new, you want a design partner who can move at pace, add real capability, and become a trusted extension of your team. Our work with Brush-Baby on their teether range and with Catipilla on their cat climbing products.
Funded startup founders. You have a strong concept and the investment or grant funding to develop it properly. You’re ready to commit to a professional process, and you want a team who will guide you through every stage, protect your IP from day one, and help you arrive at something you’re proud of. Our award-winning work with MotionLab on their active commute bag, and with FlushBrush on their way to Dragon’s Den, show what that journey can look like.
Businesses with a clear commercial goal. You want a product that performs well in the market, and you understand that good design and sound manufacturing thinking are what make that possible. The clients we work best with care about profitability and practicality as much as we do, and that shared focus makes for excellent projects.
We work with clients across the UK and internationally, including the United States. Find out more about where we work.

What our best-fit clients usually have in common
The clients who get the most from working with us tend to share a similar mindset and approach.
They want a partner, not just a supplier. Our best clients treat us as an extension of their team. They stay involved at key stages, share context openly and give feedback that moves the project forward. They trust us to own the process day-to-day, and they know they’ll be consulted when decisions matter.
They value manufacturable thinking from the start. A concept that can’t be made at the right cost isn’t a solution, it’s a delay. Our best clients want ideas that are grounded in real manufacturing constraints from the very beginning, and they appreciate that this approach saves time and money further down the line.
They have a real problem worth solving. The projects that energise us most are the ones with a genuine unmet need at the centre. A product that frustrates users. A gap in the range that the client can see but can’t yet fill. A competitor doing something your customers are responding to. That’s where our approach delivers the most value.
They’re comfortable working in clearly defined stages. Product development takes time, and our process is structured around that reality. Each stage runs roughly four to six weeks and ends with a clear output and review point. Clients who embrace that structure consistently get the best results.
They take IP seriously. We work under NDA from the very first conversation, and you retain full ownership of your idea and everything we create for you. Our best clients appreciate that proactive approach and expect it as standard.
You understand AI-generated concepts need real-world refining. AI tools can produce visually compelling ideas, but they rarely account for how a product is actually manufactured. Our best clients bring us their AI-generated concepts knowing they’ll need expert engineering to become manufacture-ready, and we’ll give you an honest assessment of what it takes to get it there.

Which industries and product types does Idea Reality specialise in?
Toys and children’s products. This is an area of genuine depth for us. Designing for children demands a particular kind of thinking: the size of a child’s hands, how they interact with an object, what happens under unintended use, and which regulations apply at every stage. We design with all of that built in from the start. Projects like Ti’tains, Scooterpeg and Sunny Smiles reflect the range of work we do in this space.
Baby products. Baby product design carries its own regulatory and safety requirements, and we understand them well. The Brush-Baby teether and Shady Baby sun tent are examples of products where getting those details right was central to the brief.
Pet products. A growing and exciting category for us, with important considerations around user interaction, durability and safety. EasyEat, designed for flat-faced dog breeds, and The Dome Bowl and Catipilla‘s modular cat climbing range show the variety of problems we’ve tackled in this space.
Outdoor, sports and consumer products. Our experience across manufacturing processes and materials means we adapt quickly to new product types. From the MotionLab active commute bag to The Golf Tent and BackStack fitness product, we bring the same rigour to every category we work in.
Electronics and product enclosures. We design enclosures and casings for electronics ranging from consumer wearables to specialist, high-value applications. Noti, a wearable IoT device, Tevolt‘s slim magnetic power banks, Clavi‘s luxury hardware wallet and LuminAir‘s drone design are examples of the electronics work we do. We’ve also designed specialist camera enclosures for demanding defence applications, where performance requirements and compliance standards are particularly high.
Our specialism is our holistic approach. We support the project from beginning to end, and our manufacturing knowledge shapes every design decision along the way. Clients who bring us in at the start and keep us involved throughout consistently get the best outcomes. You can explore the full range of our work in our portfolio.
When we may not be the right fit
Being honest about this is something we think matters. A good working relationship starts with the right match, and not every project is one we can add real value to.
You don’t yet have funding in place. Professional product development requires a genuine budget commitment, and we want every client to be set up for success from the start. If funding isn’t confirmed yet, our guide to the costs of new product development is a useful place to understand what’s typically involved. It’s worth knowing that we also offer tips on how to Fund Your Product Idea service for clients who are actively exploring routes to investment.
Your product is purely fabric or soft goods. We work with hard materials: plastics, metals and structural components. If your product has no hardware element at all, we’d point you towards a specialist in that area. If there’s any structural, mechanical or electronic component in the mix, it’s always worth a conversation.
You are simply looking to source and brand an existing product. Minor modifications on sourced products or standalone branding exercises on existing products are best handled elsewhere. Our branding and logo design service exists as part of a wider product launch, not as a standalone output for products we haven’t developed. We’ll always tell you honestly if we think a simpler route is the right one.
You’re creating a one-off bespoke piece. We design for mass manufacture. If you need a single custom-made item, a specialist craftsperson or bespoke maker will serve you better.
The right next step is speaking to a supplier directly. If we think that’s the case, we’ll tell you. We’d rather give you that guidance than take on a project where we’re not genuinely adding value.

Supporting different types of clients
Established businesses. You may already have in-house design capability, but every team has limits. We come in when you need specialist manufacturing knowledge, a fresh perspective, or additional capacity to move faster. We work alongside your team rather than replacing it, and many of our business clients tell us we quickly start to feel like part of the furniture.
Funded startup founders. If this is your first product, you’re in good company. We’ve helped many founders navigate the full process from a standing start, and we genuinely enjoy that work. Our free online idea review gives you an honest picture of the project before any commitment is made.
Clients who’ve worked with other designers. Some clients come to us after working with a freelancer or a design student who didn’t have experience taking a product all the way to manufacture. That’s more common than you’d think, and it’s not a problem. We can assess what’s sound and identify what needs to change. We tend to get the best results when we’re involved from an early stage, but we understand that’s not always how things work out.
Clients based outside the UK. We work with clients internationally, including in the United States. Find out more about where we work.
How clients typically work with us
Most client relationships follow a clear and straightforward pattern.
It starts with a free online idea review. You share your project, and we give you an honest assessment and a tailored proposal. There’s no commitment required to have that first conversation, and many clients tell us it’s one of the most useful hours they’ve spent on the project.
From there, the project moves through our clearly defined product design process: concept design, development, prototyping and manufacture preparation. Each stage has defined outputs and a review point. You stay involved at the moments that matter, with more frequent updates whenever that’s useful.
By the end of the process, you have a product that is engineered and ready for mass manufacture. You have the IP, the documentation, and a design team who understands your product inside out if you want to keep developing it.
What successful client relationships look like
The clients who get the most from working with us tend to arrive at a similar place.
They have a product in the market that performs well – a real physical product in customers’ hands, generating revenue and building the brand. They have confidence in the manufacturing process and a clear picture of what the next product might look like. Some, like the team behind BrushBaby, go on to win awards. Others, like FlushBrush, take their product to national television.
Many of our clients come back for their next project. That’s the outcome we’re working towards from day one, and it’s the best measure we have of whether the relationship has worked well.
What to consider when choosing a product design partner
A few things worth thinking through carefully before you commit to a team.
Ask whether they’ve taken products all the way to manufacture. Concept design and manufacture-ready engineering are different disciplines. Make sure the team you choose has done both, and can show you products they’ve seen through the full process. Our portfolio is a good place to start.
Check how they handle IP. If you are not looking to give away equity of your product, and wish to retain full ownership of your idea and any IP created during the project, make sure there’s an NDA in place before you share anything, and read the contract carefully.
Understand the cost structure before you start. Good product development requires real investment. Our guide to the costs of new product development sets out what’s typically involved at each stage, honestly and in plain English.
Find out who you’ll actually be speaking to. With some agencies, your day-to-day contact is an account manager. With us, you speak directly to the design team. That means faster decisions, better retention of context, and a relationship that actually feels like a partnership. You can meet the team here.
